What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal pauses in breathing or instances of abnormally low breathing, during sleep. Each pause in breathing, called an apnea, can last from a few seconds to minutes, and may occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. The number of apneas is calculated into an index called an AHI. Pauses in breathing throughout the night puts a tremendous amount of stress on the body. When a person stops breathing, the brain wakes the person up just enough to start breathing again. The body will feel the effects over time through lack of oxygen and lost REM and delta sleep.
